U3A History Walk in Norwich

Unexpectedly it was a fine morning when 15 of us met at the Forum with Sally Ann Dawes, friend and Blue Badge Guide, to share with us some of her vast knowledge of the city as we walked towards the Cathedral, from Norman times to the present.  It was hard to imagine a market that stretched right down to the river, yet most people lived within the city walls in very cramped conditions. For some time Norwich was the second city of England.  Sally Ann told us about the civic and cultural  history, monasteries, prisons, the “Strangers” who fled from the low countries, the Quaker families that set up industries, WW2 damage and many “firsts” that Norwich can claim.   It was very absorbing, and though it will hard to retain everything we were told, we will no doubt see Norwich with different eyes in future.
